Estimate a publication window
Obituaries and death notices may appear several days after death, and memorial notices can appear much later. Search a broader range when the exact date is uncertain.
Identify historical place names
County boundaries, town names and newspaper markets change. Check the jurisdiction used at the time and include nearby towns where family or funeral services were based.
Use newspaper archives strategically
Search surname variants and initials, then narrow by title and date. Optical character recognition often misreads old print, so browse individual issues when keyword search fails.
Combine free and paid sources
A free index may reveal a date, newspaper or page number that can be used in a library collection. Paid archives can save time but do not necessarily contain every local title.
Keep record types separate
A burial entry or civil death index can supply a date and place that improves the newspaper search. It does not replace the narrative or family information found in an obituary.
