Country obituary guide

Ireland Obituary Search

For a recent Irish death, begin with RIP.ie and search by county as well as surname. For historical research, use Irish Newspaper Archives, the British Newspaper Archive, Findmypast and Irish Genealogy. Keep obituary, death notice and civil death record separate: each can confirm different facts and follows different access rules.

Search by region

County is usually the strongest location clue. Also try the place of residence, death and burial; notices can mention several counties and may appear in a regional rather than national paper.

Free and paid access

RIP.ie and Irish Genealogy can be searched free. Historical newspaper images and some genealogy collections may require a subscription or trial.

If the name search fails

Try Irish and anglicized name forms, initials, maiden names and adjacent counties. If no notice is found, consult civil registration and burial sources, which are different record types.
